What Is Crypto Staking?
Staking lets you earn rewards by locking crypto to help secure a network. Learn how it works and what can go wrong.
How staking works
In proof-of-stake blockchains, validators lock up coins as a deposit for the right to confirm transactions. Regular holders can join by delegating their coins to a validator or using a staking service, and they receive a share of the rewards.
Where the rewards come from
Rewards are paid by the network, usually from newly issued coins and transaction fees. The rate varies with how many people stake and how the network is designed, so it can rise and fall over time.
Risks to understand
Prices can fall by more than the rewards you earn. Coins may be locked for days or weeks before you can withdraw. Validators that misbehave can be penalized, and services that stake for you add their own risks.
Questions to ask first
Check the lock-up period, how rewards are paid, who controls your coins, and whether the advertised rate is guaranteed. A very high rate usually signals higher risk.
