What Is Cryptocurrency? A Beginner's Guide
Cryptocurrency explained simply: what it is, how it works, and the main risks beginners should understand.
The basics
A cryptocurrency is a digital asset that exists on a blockchain, a shared record of transactions kept by thousands of computers rather than a single bank or company. Bitcoin, launched in 2009, was the first. Today there are thousands of cryptocurrencies with different purposes.
How transactions work
When you send crypto, the transaction is broadcast to the network, checked by validators or miners, and added to the blockchain. Once confirmed, it is extremely difficult to reverse. This is why double-checking addresses before sending matters.
Coins, tokens and stablecoins
Coins such as Bitcoin and Ether run on their own blockchains. Tokens are built on top of existing blockchains. Stablecoins such as USDT and USDC aim to hold a steady value against the US dollar, which makes them useful for trading and transfers.
Main risks
Crypto prices are volatile and can fall sharply in a short time. There is usually no deposit insurance, scams are common, and lost passwords or recovery phrases cannot be reset. Only trade with money you can afford to lose.
