Bitcoin Halving Explained

What the Bitcoin halving is, when it happens and why people watch it.

What happens

Roughly every four years, or every 210,000 blocks, the reward miners receive for adding a block is cut in half. The reward started at 50 bitcoin in 2009.

Past halvings

The reward fell to 25 in 2012, 12.5 in 2016, 6.25 in 2020 and 3.125 in April 2024. It will keep halving until the 21 million coin limit is reached.

Why it matters

Halvings slow the creation of new coins, which makes Bitcoin's supply schedule predictable. Many traders watch them because of the reduced new supply.

What it does not guarantee

Past price behavior around halvings does not guarantee future results. Many other factors move the market, so treat it as one piece of context, not a signal.
